Non-Local, Scouted, Advanced Summer Development Opportunities

WWFHA recently concluded an informal email survey the majority of the Women’s NCAA Divisions I and III hockey coaches in the US regarding their opinions on:

(1)    The top scouted Rep tournaments during the hockey season

(2)    Girls’ hockey development and exposure opportunities for players looking to improve skills, be seen by collegiate coaches during the off-season, and compare themselves to other players nationally

Regarding off-season development, numerous NCAA coaches said that it was advisable at the younger ages to attend camps where players can develop, compete in their age group nationally, and be seen by as many collegiate coaches as possible all at once. Then, as players get older and narrow down their collegiate search, consider going to a specific college’s summer camp (if they have one) to get to know the campus, the coaches and players. This activity will help players determine whether the school and team are the best fit for their future and if they should apply for acceptance.

The following elite development off-season programs, through Rush Hockey, were mentioned the most by the NCAA coaches in our poll, and are listed by date. It is advisable to register early to secure your spot as these programs are highly desirable and fill up quickly. Please visit the Rush website to learn more and note information is subject to change. Also note that collegiate coaches and WWFHA are not endorsing any or all of these programs, but simply providing information based on feedback received from various sources.

RUSH HOCKEY: Showcases/Camps/Tournaments for Development

Overview: Kelly Katorji runs the Rush Hockey Showcases and the Beantown Summer Classic. Numerous NCAA coaches mention his programs and tournaments for development and being seen by collegiate coaches. He scouts players from all over North America and has almost every NCAA program coach and a number of CIS coaches working as part of his camp staff during the off-season. Coaches are on the ice to run practices, develop and interact with the players. These programs are primarily targeting to those players in grades 9 – 10.

More information at: https://www.rushhockey.ca/
Kelly Katorji contact info - kelkato@rogers.com or call 519-664-1351

The following Rush development programs are available (check website for updates):

1. Rush Showcase Tournament 2014 (birth years 1997 – 2000) – Toronto, ON

Dates: June 5-8, 2014
Birth years: 1997-2000 (limited 2000 spots) –
Detail: Individual registration only – camp; goalies have to call for placement. This focuses on tournament play and less development.
WWFHA NOTE:  Kelly suggests the 2-Day College Dev Camp later in June for more development; this is massive tournament, and while competitive, it does not provide the 1v1 development and on-ice connection to college coaches as much as the 2-Day Collegiate Development Camp mentioned below.
Cost: $350
Location: Brampton Powerade Centre, Brampton Ontario Canada
More Info/Hotel/Register: https://www.rushhockey.ca/events-details.php?id=6

2. Rush Rising Stars Showcase (birth years 2000 – 2002) – Toronto, ON

Dates: June 6-8, 2014
Birth years: 2000, 2001, 2002
Overview: The goal of Pee Wee Rising Stars is to provide an elite playing environment in a tournament / showcase format and help educate younger girls and their parents on future opportunities. This is an elite event for the PeeWee division (and some Bantams), and at the same time, allow these players and parents a chance to get a glimpse of what girls hockey has in store for them in the future. Opportunity to watch the ‘SuperSeries’ tournament, which collegiate players compete.
WWFHA NOTE:  While both NCAA and CIS coaches will be bench coaching, this is not focused on development. Kelly suggests this for the elite players in these age group that want to play in a tournament and not focus on practice development with collegiate coaches (example: those who made the USA Hockey District Camp for 2000 – 2002).
Cost: $175
Location: Brampton Powerade Centre, Brampton Ontario Canada
More Info/Hotel/Register: https://www.rushhockey.ca/events-details.php?id=8

3. Rush Development 2-Day College Development Camp (birth years 1997 – 2002) – Etobioke, ON

Dates: June 28-29, 2014
Divisions/Birth Years:

1997 – 2000 Division
2001  – 2002 Division

Overview: unique opportunity to work with directly with collegiate coaches, get a lot of on-ice time (practice and games), develop hockey skills with collegiate coaches, and learn about scouting, recruitment and the state of girls’ hockey.
WWFHA NOTE:  Kelly suggests for intermediate to advance players for development during practices and games with college coaches; great introduction to Rush programs, 1v1 with college coaches, and compete with/against national players at your age group.
College Coach Staff from: St. Lawrence University, RPI, Wisconsin, Union, UCONN, Brown, Vermont, St Cloud, Colgate, Maine, Northeastern and Quinnipaic
Cost: $399
Location: Canlan Ice Sports Etobicoke – Etobicoke, ON (next to airport)
More Info/Register: https://www.rushhockey.ca/events-details.php?id=10

WWFHA Note: tournament only; not for individual development; heavily scouted.
