Western Washington Female Hockey Association (WWFHA) – the only all-girl, premiere ice hockey association in Washington State – announces a partnership with Highland Ice Arena in Shoreline, Washington.

Highland Ice Arena is the new home of WWFHA’s Washington Wild teams. It includes female-only locker rooms, full access to large and small ice sheets for USA Hockey American Developmental Model (ADM) practices and games, and use of their other facilities.

Cindy Dayley, President of WWFHA, states, “We are thrilled to make Highland our home; they have a long and storied ice hockey history. Highland founded the very first youth hockey program in the area in the 1960s, and they have always supported the female game. They hosted the first-ever female team in Washington which I played on when I was eleven years old!”

Highland provided training ice for several Olympic hopefuls both in ice hockey and figure skating; most notably Kelly Stephens-Tysland, 2006 Olympic Bronze medalist in women’s ice hockey. Dayley says, “Now, with Highland as our established home, WWFHA is expanding and developing like never before by offering even more opportunities to girls.”

All Washington Wild teams will practice at Highland, and some teams will host home games there. Wild teams belonging to BC Hockey’s Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey Associating (PCAHA) will continue to play home games on weekends at the Sportsplex in Bellingham, per PCAHA rules.

Highland continues to host WWFHA’s off-ice programs, encompassing: dry-land training; foot and ankle advisory sessions from a board certified physician and surgeon, well body, nutrition, and student counseling sessions; yoga and other sport-related training; and collegiate informational workshops, all hosted by specialty professionals.

Highland will also be the home of WWFHA’s age-appropriate spring and summer camps and clinics, and two new teams – the U12 Travel and U14 Rep Tier 2. WWFHA will continue to work with Highland to cater to female players in various ways, making the arena the center of girl's hockey in the northwest.

ABOUT HIGHLAND ICE ARENA

Highland Ice Arena was the dream of Jim and Dorothy Stephens, who opened its doors to the public in December of 1962. In the last fifty-three years, the arena has provided many firsts for the area, including the first full rubber flooring in the lobby, glass windows for viewing both inside and out, and the first Zamboni in the Northwest. Highland was also the first arena in the Northwest to install a computer-controlled, continuously monitored air-quality management system that supplies fresh, dry, pre-warmed air.
